Rolling home with the gold

On December 21st, the gold medal finals of the Stardust Juvenile fall inline hockey season was combined with a Holiday Party for the players and their parents and friends. All players and spectators were treated to complimentary food and drinks. During the evening, two Canucks tickets were won by ten year old, Tashari Bennett, one of the girls in the newly formed girls Atom team. Prizes donated by Stardust, Sports Traders, All Star Sports, Wendy's Restaurant, Bear Creek Train, Burnaby Heritage Village, Stanley Park Horse Tours, CN IMAX, Science World and Score Virtual Sports World were awarded to players throughout the evening.

Music and play by play announcements were provided by Ken Leeson and Matt Smith who kept the games on schedule and the over eight hundred spectators entertained.

But it was hockey that provided the best entertainment. The biggest upset of the evening occurred during the Squirt Division game when the Jackals won the gold medal after losing every game during the regular season. Coached by Rob Warburton, the Jackals defeated the Blast 6-5 to take home the gold.

One of the best attended games of the evening was the meeting of the Warriors and the Vipers in the Junior Division. The Warriors team is comprised of six young women and three token males. In overtime, the gold medals went home with the Warriors.

"When they started out, we never thought they would do this well, " said Brendan Hoffman, coach of the Gold winning team in the atom Division. Wendy Patterson, coach of the Warriors team noted that almost every coach in the program was in attendance cheering the girls on.

"Having the girls in the program has added a whole new dimension to our hockey program," says Noel Hardy, league co-ordinator and head cook for the finals.

And on the success of the evening, Hardy added, "we wanted a fun way to end the season and it looks like everyone had a great time. It's nice to see everybody go home with a smile on their face."
